[03:30.93]My mother bore me in the southern wild,
[03:33.67]And I am black, but oh my soul is white!
[03:37.87]White as an angel is the English child,
[03:41.19]But I am black, as if bereaved of light.
[03:44.16]My mother taught me underneath a tree,
[03:46.98]And, sitting down before the heat of day,
[03:50.26]She took me on her lap and kissed me,
[03:52.61]And, pointed to the east, began to say:
[03:56.23]“Look on the rising sun: there God does live,
[03:59.92]And gives his light, and gives his heat away,

[05:35.32]The Chimney-sweeper
[05:37.84]When my mother died I was very young,
[05:40.41]And my father sold me while yet my tongue
[05:43.32]Could scarcely cry “Weep! weep! weep! weep!”
[05:48.61]So your chimneys I sweep, and in soot I sleep.
[05:54.42]There's little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head,
[05:58.64]That curled like a lamb's back, was shaved; so I said,
[06:01.65]“Hush, Tom! never mind it, for, when your head's bare,
[06:07.30]You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair.”
[06:11.07]And so he was quiet, and that very night,
[06:14.03]As Tom was a-sleeping, he had such a sight! --
[06:17.36]That thousands of sweepers, ****, Joe, Ned, and Jack,
[06:21.86]Were all of them locked up in coffins of black.
[06:25.57]And by came an angel, who had a bright key,
[06:28.74]And he opened the coffins, and let them all free;
[06:32.60]Then down a green plain, leaping, laughing, they run,
[06:36.57]And wash in a river, and shine in the sun.
