Bills, final demands, unopened bank statements that fill you with dread, sound familiar, then you're suffering from financial phobia. There are 9,000,000 people who are happy to withdraw cash to spend it, but they avoid opening their bank statements or getting a bank balance because they're petrified of discovering what state their finances are in. I don't know what my overdraft's standing at. I just stuff my bank statements unopened into my filing box, and then eventually I get a letter telling me I've run out of money. Sometimes I put my statements to one side 'cos I'm scared of opening them, because I'm never actually sure how much money I actually have in the bank, 'cos sometimes my overdraft says I have more much, more money than what I actually have. I just try to avoid my bank balance as much as I possibly can. Just, yeah, I don't wanna know how much money I have. The new research says the number of financial phobes is growing, with women, fearing their finances the most. We knew they were having problems, feeling very, in extreme cases, very strong emotional reactions of guilt, anxiety, feeling physically sick or having heart palpitations, and we wanted to know why that was happening. And is it going to get any worse, do you think? We think it might be. We don't yet have a historical perspective on it, it's a very new finding, but we've noticed it's particularly prevalent among young people and if they keep this same attitude and aversion to finance as they go through their lives, then it's going to mushroom in the general population, and at the same time it seems that personal finances are getting more complex, new products coming on to the market, and we think that's an important part of contributing to the problem. And if your finances are out of control, avoiding getting that bank balance won't help you get to grips with your debt. Marcia Hughes, BBC News.
