[00:02.36]College English Test(Band 6)
[00:06.19]Part II Listening Comprehension
[00:09.50]Section A
[00:11.15]Directions: In this section,
[00:13.99]you will hear two long conversations.
[00:17.78]At the end of each conversation,
[00:19.94]you will hear some questions.
[00:22.33]Both the conversation and the questions
[00:24.86]will be spoken only once.
[00:28.08]After you hear a question,
[00:29.78]you must choose the best answer
[00:31.84]from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).
[00:37.35]Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1
[00:41.25]with a single line through the centre.
[00:44.56]Conversation One
[00:46.66]M: Hello, Jane.
[00:47.88]W: Hello, Paul.
[00:49.30]M: Please come in. I’m just getting ready to go home.
[00:52.92]Susan is expecting me for dinner.
[00:55.36]I wanted to be on time for a change.
[00:58.55]W: Look, I’m terribly sorry to drop in at this time on Friday, Paul,
[01:03.20]but it is rather important.
[01:05.56]M: That’s OK. What’s the problem?
[01:07.89]W: Well, Paul, I won’t keep you long.
[01:10.14]You see there is a problem with the exchange rates.
[01:13.40]The Indian Rupee has taken a fall on the foreign exchange market.
[01:17.81]You see there has been a sharp increase
[01:20.11]in Indian’s balance of payment deficit.
[01:23.17]M: I see. That’s serious, isn’t it?
[01:25.86]W: Well, as you know,
[01:26.88]there have been reports of unrest in India,
[01:29.78]and the prospects for the Rupee look pretty gloomy.
[01:33.67]M: And that’s going to affect us,
[01:35.65]as if we didn’t have enough problems on our hands.
[01:38.53]W: So I thought it would be wise to take out forward exchange cover
[01:42.50]to protect our position on the outstanding contracts.
[01:46.08]M: Just a minute.
[01:47.21]Forward exchange cover?
[01:48.97]Now what does that mean exactly?
[01:51.52]W: Well, it means that JO Motors enters into a commitment
[01:54.88]to sell Indian Rupees at the present rate.
[01:58.13]M: I see. And how will that benefit us?
[02:01.27]W: Well, JO Motors won’t lose out
[02:03.66]if the Indian Rupee falls further.
[02:06.48]M: What will it cost, Jane?
[02:08.26]W: A small percentage,
[02:09.53]about 1% and that can be built into the price of the bike.
[02:14.30]M: Well, I don’t suppose there is much choice.
[02:17.11]All right, Jane, let’s put it into action.
[02:21.08]Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
[02:25.89]1. What do we learn about the man’s daily life?
[02:43.25]2. Why did the woman come to see the man?
[03:00.32]3. What makes the woman worry about the Indian Rupee?
[03:18.77]4. Why does the woman suggest taking out forward exchange cover?
[03:37.56]Conversation Two
[03:39.62]W: Charles, among other things,
[03:41.42]you are regarded as
[03:42.37]one of the America’s great masters of the Blues-
[03:45.39]a musical idiom that's essentially about loss,
[03:48.96]particularly the loss of romantic love.
[03:51.99]Why does love die?
[03:54.08]M: People often get into love affairs
[03:56.17]because they have unrealistic expectations about somebody.
[04:00.38]Then when the person doesn’t turn out to be
[04:02.88]who they thought he or she was,
[04:05.06]they start thinking “maybe I can change him or her.”
[04:09.07]That kind of thinking is a mistake.
[04:11.57]Because when the dust settles,
[04:13.45]people are going to be pretty much what they are.
[04:16.15]It’s a rare thing for anybody to be able to change
[04:19.24]who they really are.
[04:20.59]And this creates a lot of problems.
[04:23.44]W: At 62, you continue to spend a large percentage of your life touring.
[04:28.40]What appeals to you about life on the road?
[04:31.48]M: Music. I don’t especially love life on the road,
[04:35.31]But I figure
[04:36.08]if you are lucky enough to be able to do
[04:38.13]what you truly love doing,
[04:40.53]you’ve got the ultimate in life.
[04:43.44]W: What’s the most widely-held misconception
[04:46.13]about the life of a famous musician?
[04:48.85]M: People think it’s all glamour.
[04:51.44]Actually we have the same trouble as they do.
[04:54.50]Playing music doesn’t mean life treats you any better.
[04:58.29]W: How do you feel about being recognized
[05:00.36]everywhere you go?
[05:01.98]M: You’d think I’d be used to it by now.
[05:04.53]But I still find it fascinating.
[05:06.84]You go to a little town in Japan,
[05:08.90]where nobody speaks English,
[05:11.31]yet they know you on site and know all your music.
[05:15.37]I’m still amazed by the love people
[05:17.32]express for me and by music.
[05:20.69]Questions 5 to 8 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
[05:25.69]5. What does the man say about most people
[05:29.86]when they get into love affairs?
[05:44.88]6. What does the man say about himself as a singer
[05:49.35]on the road most of his life?
[06:04.63]7. What do most people think of the life of a famous musician?
[06:22.77]8. How does the man feel whenever he is recognized by his fans?
[06:41.56]Section B
[06:43.04]Directions: In this section,
[06:45.82]you will hear two passages.
[06:48.61]At the end of each passage,
[06:50.33]you will hear some questions.
[06:52.74]Both the passage and the questions
[06:54.92]will be spoken only once.
[06:57.79]After you hear a question,
[06:59.56]you must choose the best answer
[07:01.35]from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).
[07:06.43]Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1
[07:10.15]with a single line through the centre.
[07:13.07]Passage One
[07:14.57]Changing technology and markets
[07:17.01]have stimulated the team approach to management.
[07:20.52]Inflation, resource scarcity, reduced personnel levels and budget cuts
[07:25.80]have all underscored the need for better coordination in organizations.
[07:30.63]Team management provides for this coordination.
[07:33.94]Team management calls for new skills
[07:36.46]if personnel potential is to be fully realized.
[07:39.89]Although a team may be composed of knowledgeable people,
[07:43.06]they must learn new ways of relating and working together
[07:46.60]to solve cross-functional problems.
[07:49.37]When teams consist of experienced employees from hierarchical organizations
[07:54.10]who have been conditioned to traditional organizational culture, cooperation
[07:58.96]may not occur naturally.
[08:01.15]It may need to be created. Furthermore,
[08:04.37]the issue is not just how the team can function more effectively,
[08:07.78]but how it integrates with the overall organization or society
[08:11.24]that it supposedly serves.
[08:14.17]A group of individuals is not automatically a team.
[08:18.25]Therefore, team building may be necessary
[08:21.24]in order to improve the group’s performance.
[08:24.40]Casey, an expert in this field,
[08:26.68]suggests that the cooperation process within teams
[08:29.55]must be organized, promoted and managed.
[08:33.57]He believes that team corporation results
[08:36.27]when members go beyond their individual capabilities,
[08:40.04]beyond what each is used to being and doing.
[08:43.34]Together, the team may then
[08:44.89]produce something new, unique and superior to that of any one member.
[08:50.80]For this to happen,
[08:52.02]he suggests the multi-cultural managers exhibit understanding
[08:55.95]of their own and other’s cultural influences and limitations.
[09:00.46]They should also cultivate such skills
[09:02.38]as toleration of ambiguity, persistence and patience,
[09:06.30]as well as assertiveness.
[09:08.29]If a team manager exemplifies such qualities,
[09:11.44]then the team as a whole
[09:12.56]would be better able to realize their potential
[09:15.23]and achieve their objectives.
[09:17.53]Questions 9 to 11 are based on the passage
[09:20.60]you have just heard.
[09:22.33]9. What should team members do to fully realize their potential?
[09:40.85]10. What needs to be considered for effective team management?
[09:59.29]11. What conclusion can we draw from what Casey says?
[10:17.02]Passage Two
[10:18.97]Advertising informs consumers
[10:21.43]about the existence and benefits of products and services
[10:25.26]and attempts to persuade them to buy them.
[10:27.81]The best form of advertising is probably word-of-mouth advertising
[10:32.07]which occurs when people tell their friends
[10:34.59]about the benefits of products or services
[10:37.23]that they have purchased.
[10:38.86]Yet virtually no providers of goods or services rely on this alone,
[10:44.05]but use paid advertising instead.
[10:47.17]Indeed many organizations also use institutional or prestige advertising
[10:53.18]which is designed to build up their reputation
[10:55.87]rather than to sell particular products.
[10:58.78]Although large companies could
[11:00.32]easily set up their own advertising departments,
[11:03.45]write their own advertisements and buy media space themselves,
[11:07.79]they tend to use the services of large advertising agencies.
[11:12.25]These are likely to have more resources and more knowledge
[11:15.70]about all aspects of advertising and advertising media
[11:19.73]than a single company.
[11:21.49]It is also easier for a dissatisfied company to give its account
[11:25.71]to another agency than it would be to fire its own advertising staff.
[11:31.09]The client company generally gives the advertising agency an agreed budget,
[11:35.67]a statement of the objectives of the advertising campaign,
[11:38.74]known as a brief and an overall advertising strategy
[11:43.05]concerning the message to be communicated to the target customers.
[11:47.68]The agency creates advertisements and develops a media plan,
[11:52.27]specifying which media will be used and in which proportions.
[11:56.94]Agencies often produce alternative ads or commercials
[12:00.61]that are pre-tested in newspapers, television stations, etc.,
[12:04.93]in different parts of the country
[12:07.23]before a final choice is made prior to a national campaign.
[12:12.28]Questions 12 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.
[12:17.13]12. What is probably the best form of advertising
[12:21.71]according to the speaker?
[12:38.14]13. What does the speaker say is the purpose
[12:41.33]of many organizations’ using prestige advertising?
[12:57.15]14. How do large companies generally handle their advertising?
[13:15.58]15. What would advertising agencies often do before a national campaign?
[13:35.30]Section C
[13:37.36]Directions: In this section,
[13:40.30]you will hear recordings of lectures
[13:42.53]or talks followed by some questions.
[13:45.99]The recordings will be played only once.
[13:49.64]After you hear a question,
[13:51.31]you must choose the best answer from the four choices
[13:54.68]marked A), B), C) and D).
[13:58.53]Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1
[14:02.17]with a single line through the centre.
[14:04.99]Now listen to the following recording
[14:07.68]and answer questions 16 to 19.
[14:12.41]Moderator: Hello, ladies and gentlemen,
[14:14.04]it is a great honor to introduce our speaker for today’s lecture,
[14:18.09]Dr. Steven Taylor.
[14:20.17]Dr. Taylor, Professor of Sociology at University of Oxford,
[14:25.06]has written numerous articles and books on the topic of love,
[14:28.72]which is the most simple but important issue in everybody’s life.
[14:33.01]Welcome, Dr. Taylor.
[14:34.78]Dr. Taylor: Good morning, everyone.
[14:36.46]I’m sure you all have got some deep feelings of life.
[14:41.11]And you may have tried different kinds of descriptions
[14:44.11]of your own life.
[14:46.00]What I want to tell you today is that life comes in a package.
[14:50.29]This package includes happiness and sorrow,
[14:53.51]success and failure, hope and despair.
[14:57.73]Life is a learning process.
[15:00.70]Experiences in life teach us new lessons
[15:03.55]and make us a better person.
[15:05.83]With each passing day we learn to handle various situations.
[15:10.76]First, let’s talk about love.
[15:13.92]Love plays an important role in our life.
[15:17.19]Love makes you feel wanted.
[15:19.69]Without love a person could become cruel.
[15:22.87]Second, do you think you are a happy person?
[15:26.97]Materialistic happiness is short-lived,
[15:30.18]but happiness achieved by bringing a smile
[15:32.56]to another persong's face
[15:34.34]gives a certain level of fulfillment.
[15:37.18]Peace of mind is the main link to happiness.
[15:40.12]No mind is happy without peace.
[15:43.22]Third, I’m sure you all have experienced success
[15:47.25]as well as failure.
[15:49.56]Failure is the path to success.
[15:52.70]It helps us to touch the sky,
[15:54.93]teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way.
[15:59.15]Success brings in money, fame, pride and self-respect.
[16:03.97]Here it becomes very important to keep our head on our shoulder.
[16:08.49]The only way to show our gratitude to God for giving us success
[16:12.29]is by being humble, modest and respectful to the less fortunate ones.
[16:17.38]The last thing I want to share with you is about hope and despair.
[16:21.82]Hope is what keeps life going.
[16:24.30]Parents always hope their children do well.
[16:27.22]Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience.
[16:32.06]Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour,
[16:36.07]because after every night there is day.
[16:39.43]Nothing remains the same. We have only one choice:
[16:43.51]keep moving on in life and be hopeful.
[16:46.60]Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday,
[16:50.18]for it has passed and is beyond our control.
[16:53.41]Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dull.
[16:58.29]So the only alternative is working hard today,
[17:01.69]so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.
[17:04.85]After all of these,
[17:06.66]have you got a totally brand new feeling towards your own life?
[17:10.99]Or maybe you will have a different opinion about
[17:13.67]what you have experienced before?
[17:16.23]I do hope that you will understand life better. Thank you!
[17:21.02]16. What does the introduction say about the topic of love?
[17:39.30]17. What is the main link to happiness according to Dr. Taylor?
[17:57.79]18. How should successful people treat the less fortunate ones
[18:03.22]according to Dr. Taylor?
[18:18.47]19. Why should we work hard today?
[18:35.10]Now listen to the following recording
[18:37.79]and answer questions 20 to 22.
[18:42.04]Did you know that most people find it difficult
[18:44.65]to write sales copy that works?
[18:47.32]You see there is this idea that sales
[18:49.55]are all about lies and that you have to
[18:51.93]be really tricky and clever with words to sell your product.
[18:56.38]This is absolute misunderstanding.
[18:59.31]Sure there are people out there selling rubbish
[19:01.81]and telling lies but you will only buy something
[19:04.92]from them once and then only out of desperation.
[19:08.73]Most people have a pretty good sense of what is truth.
[19:12.53]This is all you have to do.
[19:14.52]Tell the truth about what your product can do
[19:17.03]for your client. Imagine you have a friend
[19:19.95]and you are sitting down having a coffee together
[19:22.87]and they ask you what your product can do for them.
[19:26.33]Do you pull out the high pressure professional sales pitch
[19:29.82]or start spinning lies?
[19:31.94]No, you give them the inside ****, the straight pitch,
[19:35.97]the “real deal”, in short, the plain truth.
[19:40.45]One of the first lessons I learned
[19:42.18]when I studied professional copywriting
[19:44.59]was to write like people talk,
[19:46.77]using the same rhythm and style.
[19:49.55]On the Internet the written word is
[19:51.48]all you’ve got so you had better
[19:53.23]make it effective or you are going
[19:55.24]to lose a hell of a lot of customers.
[19:57.87]A simple and easy way to write great copy
[20:00.78]is to audio record yourself actually talking
[20:03.54]with a real friend about what your product can do for them.
[20:07.36]Then get someone to type up this conversation
[20:10.29]and all in the form of an open letter
[20:12.75]and you will have created sales copy that is
[20:15.04]better than 90% of the self-centred rubbish out there.
[20:19.98]There are so many false advertisements out there
[20:22.51]that people are entranced by honest copy.
[20:25.76]They don’t care if it’s rough so long as it reads true.
[20:29.59]I swear I saw an ad earlier today
[20:31.64]on a classified site that read “earn $75,000 per week...
[20:36.89]We do all the work for you.” Are they insane?
[20:40.74]If you were making $75,000 per week,
[20:43.85]would you even get out of bed,
[20:45.76]let alone bother signing people up for some dodgy deal?
[20:49.80]And what about the ads that say no selling?
[20:52.69]All you have to do is introduce 2 people
[20:55.04]and we do the rest. Don’t get me started.
[20:58.55]Remember, business hasn’t changed.
[21:00.89]People still want to buy from someone they trust.
[21:04.19]Make sure you have a product you genuinely believe in.
[21:07.52]Do something you love for work
[21:09.50]and you will turn your customers into clients for life.
[21:13.80]20. What is the misunderstanding about sales
[21:18.97]according to the speaker?
[21:33.36]21. What is the simple and easy way
[21:37.84]to write great copy?
[21:52.73]22. What does the speaker suggest salespeople do?
[22:11.14]Now listen to the following recording
[22:13.50]and answer questions 23 to 25.
[22:17.44]Experts predict nine billion people
[22:20.40]will live on our planet by 2050.
[22:23.90]They say by that time demand for food
[22:26.53]will be two times what it is now.
[22:29.48]Officials are worried about that prediction
[22:32.19]because many people have already suffered
[22:34.65]from a lack of food.
[22:36.79]More than 800 million people go to bed hungry.
[22:40.87]A solution to the problem may be as close as our forests.
[22:45.62]A new report says forests could help reduce hunger
[22:49.29]and improve nutrition if they are properly managed.
[22:53.97]Sayay Veoun works at the Cambodian
[22:56.58]Federation for Bee Conservation.
[22:59.43]He says some of the best honey in the world
[23:01.90]comes from forests in southern Cambodia.
[23:05.32]He says they work with five local honey buyers
[23:08.48]who work with 42 honey collectors.
[23:11.67]People buy the honey at stores in the capital, Phnom Penh.
[23:15.78]Honey smells like fresh flowers,
[23:18.12]which means it is natural honey from the jungle.
[23:22.02]Healthy forests provide half of
[23:24.25]the fresh fruit we eat worldwide.
[23:26.27]They also produce valuable crops like coffee,
[23:29.14]avocados and other healthful seeds and nuts.
[23:33.41]Bhaskar Vira is the director of the University
[23:36.30]of Cambridge Conservation Research Institute
[23:39.34]and an expert of the International Union of
[23:41.79]Forest Research Organizations.
[23:44.77]He recently has released a report at the United Nations
[23:48.28]about forest and jungle foods.
[23:51.29]Mr. Vira says crops that grow on trees
[23:54.09]can help feed people living in and around forests.
[23:57.98]It’s like an insurance policy.
[24:00.30]Having access to those tree-based foods
[24:02.96]is hugely important when you can’t buy food from
[24:05.86]other sources or when you can’t produce food
[24:09.03]because your fields have failed.
[24:11.51]The report says that forest health
[24:13.44]and economic value improves when people who live in
[24:17.05]or near forests are given greater control of them.
[24:21.08]For example, a project in Ghana aims for proper management
[24:24.91]of forests and fields together.
[24:27.54]Michael Henchard leads the project.
[24:29.78]He says he will help people who live nearby earn money
[24:33.23]and get trees on their land.
[24:35.61]The people involved hope to grow the Allanblackia plant.
[24:39.78]The oil from its seed can be used in soap,
[24:42.70]beauty products and food.
[24:45.02]The trees provide shade, improve air quality
[24:48.20]and also help fight climate change.
[24:51.92]23. What might be a solution to reduce hunger?
[25:11.20]24. In what case are the tree-based foods hugely
[25:14.53]important according to Mr. Vira?

Obilto:
Akunamatataa:
超市里听到的 太难听了
涒沐丶:
