[00:02.95]College English Test Band 6
[00:06.37]Part Listening Comprehension
[00:10.01]Section A
[00:11.71]Directions: In this section,
[00:14.49]you will hear two long conversations.
[00:18.39]At the end of each conversation,
[00:20.48]you will hear some questions.
[00:22.93]Both the conversation and the questions
[00:25.36]will be spoken only once.
[00:28.66]After you hear a question,
[00:30.35]you must choose the best answer
[00:32.31]from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).
[00:37.86]Then mark the corresponding letter
[00:40.17]on Answer Sheet 1 with a single line
[00:42.81]through the centre.
[00:44.93]Conversation One
[00:47.85]M: Id like to go to the States,
[00:49.37]but if I took the job there,
[00:51.12]I wont get a very good salary.
[00:52.99]W: Really? I thought salaries were high there,
[00:55.77]but there would be some fringe
[00:57.33] benefits presumably.
[00:59.20]M: Oh, yes. Id be stimulating
[01:01.93]and it has some advantages.
[01:03.91]W: What else do you have in mind?
[01:05.82]M: Well, theres a position in Portugal.
[01:08.93]W: How does it compare?
[01:10.56]M: Itd offer greater security,
[01:12.52]because itd be on a home-based contract.
[01:14.93]W: And salary?
[01:16.36]M: Much better.
[01:18.00] I get an overseas allowance plus
[01:20.05]free accommodation from the firm.
[01:22.05]W: Presumably youll be given moving
[01:24.34] expenses for the Portugal job?
[01:26.26]M: Yes, but just to complicate matters,
[01:29.08]theres a possibility of a post in Sao Paulo.
[01:31.96]W: Thats Brazil, isnt it?
[01:33.79]M: Yes. And Id get promotion
[01:35.48]if I took a post there.
[01:37.22]W: Id love to go to Brazil.
[01:39.17]M: But there are some disadvantages.
[01:41.69] Id have to do a five-year term there.
[01:44.34]W: Thats no problem surely.
[01:46.04]M: Well,
[01:46.98]not at the moment.
[01:48.37] But if there were a change in family circumstances,
[01:50.81]Id be a long way from home.
[01:52.87]W: But if you are worried about distance,
[01:54.70]isnt that the same problem with the States?
[01:57.16]M: Yes, but in the States
[01:58.85] Id be on an annual contract,
[02:01.01]so I could leave fairly quickly if I needed to.
[02:03.85]W: In Portugal?
[02:06.00]M: Well, thats almost next door, isnt it?
[02:08.14]I could visit home every few months if necessary.
[02:10.88]W: I can see youve got a difficult choice to make.
[02:13.51]M: Well, fortunately I dont have to
[02:15.56] make up my mind about any of them yet.
[02:18.40] In fact, I havent even been
[02:20.35] called for an interview.
[02:22.33]Questions 1 to 4 are based
[02:24.10] on the conversation you have just heard.
[02:27.03]1. What does the man say
[02:29.35]about the job in the States?
[02:44.27] 2. What benefit would the man get
[02:46.85]if he took the post in Sao Paulo?
[03:02.34] 3. What does the man say is
[03:05.08] the disadvantage of working in Brazil?
[03:20.66] 4. What do we learn from the end of the conversation?
[03:37.97] Conversation Two
[03:39.79]W: Good morning,
[03:40.76]High Mountain Savings and Loan.
[03:42.62] How may we help you?
[03:44.37]M: Well, Im looking for the highest rate
[03:46.28]possible on a short-term certificate of deposit account.
[03:50.53]W: Well, lets see what we can do for you.
[03:53.07] High Mountain is currently offering a rate of 6.
[03:55.47]4% on a thirteen-week account
[03:58.79]with a minimum deposit of only 12 000 dollars,
[04:02.37]6. 55% on a minimum deposit of 25 000 dollars
[04:07.93]and 6. 7% on a deposit of 50 000 dollars.
[04:12.86] Those will have yields of 6. 55%,
[04:15.77]6. 71% and 6. 87% respectively.
[04:21.83]M: Rate and yield?
[04:23.70]Im afraid I dont understand the difference.
[04:25.88]W: Well, sir. The rate is the percentage
[04:28.01] of simple interest paid on your money,
[04:30.49]and the yield is the total percentage
[04:32.42] you will receive on your account
[04:34.09]if you leave your money with us for
[04:35.67]at least a year at the same interest rate.
[04:38.84]M: Oh, well. . . um. . .
[04:40.72] But Im not interested in long-term investing
[04:43.42]and three months sounds just fine.
[04:46.62]W: Then perhaps you would like
[04:48.47]to open one of our high finance money
[04:49.79]market checking accounts.
[04:52.08] With a minimum balance of only 50 000 dollars,
[04:55.26]youll get interest of 6. 1%
[04:57.56]on any amount over that,
[04:59.46]for a yearly yield of 6.27%.
[05:02.97] Of course,
[05:04.21]there is no penalty for early withdraw.
[05:06.49]M: No, thank you. I. . .
[05:08.91]W: Or, could we persuade you
[05:10.38] to save with us if we offered you
[05:11.83] a dining coupon book that
[05:13.26]will get you a 25% discount
[05:15.74]at many of the areas leading restaurants
[05:18.10] at a cost to you of only 12 dollars and 95 cents?
[05:21.85]M: Look, I think Ill just call around
[05:24.03] for more information.
[05:25.71] Thank you for your time.
[05:27.96] Questions 5 to 8 are based
[05:30.05]on the conversation you have just heard.
[05:33.68] 5. What is the mans purpose
[05:37.09]in making the phone call?
[05:51.99] 6. What is the rate on the 13-week account
[05:56.08] for the minimum deposit of 25,000 dollars?
[06:12.86] 7. What is the man most interested in?
[06:30.52] 8. What did the woman do
[06:33.83]to persuade the man to deposit in her bank?
[06:50.28] Section B
[06:51.30]Directions: In this section,
[06:53.78]you will hear two passages.
[06:56.36]At the end of each passage,
[06:58.33]you will hear some questions.
[07:00.97]Both the passage and the questions
[07:02.78]will be spoken only once.
[07:06.08]After you hear a question,
[07:07.58]you must choose the best answer
[07:09.42]from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).
[07:14.66]Then mark the corresponding letter
[07:16.78]on Answer Sheet 1 with a single line
[07:19.42]through the centre.
[07:21.38]Passage One
[07:23.36] Karen Smith is a buyer
[07:24.83]for a department store in New York.
[07:27.37]Department store buyers purchase the goods
[07:29.51]that their stores sell.
[07:31.98] They not only have to know
[07:33.34]what is fashionable at the moment,
[07:35.22]but also have to guess what will
[07:36.78] become fashionable next season or next year.
[07:40.31] Most buyers work for just one department in a store.
[07:44.18] But the goods that Karen finds
[07:45.69] may be displayed and sold in several
[07:47.92]different sections of the store.
[07:50.04] Her job involves buying handicrafts
[07:51.98] from all over the world.
[07:54.12] Last year, she made a trip to
[07:55.54]Morocco and returned with rugs,
[07:57.85]pots, dishes and pans.
[08:00.35] The year before,
[08:01.40]she visited Mexico,
[08:02.84]and bought back hand-made table cloths,
[08:05.21]mirrors with frames of tin and paper flowers.
[08:08.93] The paper flowers are bright and colorful,
[08:11.38]so they were used to decorate the whole store.
[08:14.67] This year Karen is travelling in Malaysia,
[08:17.18]Thailand and Indonesia.
[08:19.49] Many of the countries that Karen
[08:21.97]visits have government offices
[08:23.17] that promote handicrafts.
[08:25.73] The officials are glad to cooperate
[08:27.56]with her by showing her the products
[08:29.77] that are available.
[08:31.59] Karen especially likes to visit markets
[08:33.61]in small towns and villages
[08:35.66]whenever she can arrange for it.
[08:38.24] She is always looking for interesting
[08:39.93] and unusual items.
[08:42.35] Karen thinks she has the best job
[08:44.47] she could have found.
[08:46.21] She loves all the travelling that she has to do,
[08:48.51]because she often visits markets
[08:50.31]and small out-of-the-way places.
[08:52.71] She sees much more of the country
[08:54.48]she visits than an ordinary tourist would.
[08:57.34] As soon as she gets back to New York from one trip,
[09:00.19]Karen begins to plan another.
[09:03.64]Questions 9 to 11 are based
[09:05.64]on the passage you have just heard.
[09:09.13]9. What is said to make
[09:11.13]a good department store buyer?
[09:26.38]10. What does Karens job involve?
[09:42.42]11. Why does Karen think
[09:44.67]she has got the best job?
[09:59.74] Passage Two
[10:01.34]Vaukin de Silva is a Brazilian
[10:03.41] who lives and works in New York.
[10:05.78] Brazils most important product
[10:07.28] is coffee and coffee is Vaukins business.
[10:11.26] He works for an international coffee institute.
[10:14.25] It represents Brazil and several
[10:15.90]other countries that export coffee.
[10:19.25] The institute wants more people
[10:20.67]to drink more coffee.
[10:22.56] That hasnt been easy to do
[10:23.86]for the last few months.
[10:25.61] A period of freezing weather
[10:27.27]destroyed a large part of Brazils coffee crop.
[10:30.50] As a result, there has been a shortage
[10:32.23]of coffee throughout the world.
[10:34.36] The shortage has caused prices to go very high.
[10:37.96] Many people are talking about
[10:39.09] giving up coffee until the prices come down again.
[10:42.82] All the countries that are represented
[10:44.41] in the institute want people
[10:45.70] to continue drinking coffee.
[10:47.19] They spend a lot of time
[10:49.71]explaining the recent rise in price
[10:51.65] to newspaper reporters.
[10:54.29] They want the public to
[10:55.25]understand the reason for the shortage.
[10:57.72] A month ago, Vaukin was put in charge of
[11:00.09]an advertising campaign.
[11:02.29] The campaign will try to encourage people
[11:04.14] to keep on drinking coffee.
[11:06.88] Sometimes, Vaukin misses the beaches
[11:09.46] and tropical weather in Rio de Janeiro,
[11:11.52]but he likes life in New York.
[11:13.86] He is young,
[11:14.96]only 27 years old,
[11:16.53]and he is a good-looking bachelor.
[11:18.89] There are a lot of women to meet
[11:20.46] in New York and a lot of places
[11:22.25] to go with them.
[11:24.21] When he misses home,
[11:25.15]there are several Brazilian restaurants
[11:26.85]where he can go and speak Portuguese,
[11:28.94]his native language.
[11:30.92] The last few weeks, however,
[11:32.63]hes been too busy to think about
[11:34.07] anything except coffee prices
[11:35.26] and his advertising campaign.
[11:39.99]Questions 12 to 15 are based
[11:42.27]on the passage you have just heard.
[11:44.96]12. What does the passage say
[11:48.44]about the international coffee institute?
[12:04.12]13. What caused the recent shortage
[12:08.41]of coffee throughout the world?
[12:23.74]14. What do we learn about Vaukin de Silva?
[12:41.04]15. What has occupied Vaukins mind
[12:44.84]for the last few weeks?
[13:00.18]Section C
[13:01.91]Directions: In this section,
[13:05.00]you will hear recordings of lectures
[13:07.04]or talks followed by some questions.
[13:10.04]The recordings will be played only once.
[13:13.10]After you hear a question,
[13:14.70]you must choose the best answer
[13:16.49]from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).
[13:21.51]Then mark the corresponding letter
[13:23.44]on Answer Sheet 1 with a single line
[13:25.84]through the centre.
[13:27.55]Now listen to the following recording
[13:29.83]and answer questions 16 to 19.
[13:33.87]Moderator: Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
[13:35.70]It gives me great pleasure
[13:36.96]to introduce our speaker for today's lecture,
[13:39.78]Dr. Adam Green.
[13:41.23]Dr. Green,
[13:42.12]professor of communication at Harvard University USA,
[13:46.01]has written numerous articles and books
[13:48.22]on the issues about negotiation,
[13:50.60]which is much more difficult than normal talk.
[13:53.43]Although most used in business areas,
[13:55.76]it is more and more important in people's daily life.
[13:59.57]Dr. Green: Thank you for that introduction.
[14:01.34]I feel honored to give a speech here.
[14:03.92]There are some people
[14:04.89]that love the art of negotiation.
[14:07.29]Some even live for it.
[14:09.13]They thrive on the excitement,
[14:11.13]elevated blood pressure and adrenal rush
[14:14.08]that comes with the search for agreement
[14:16.28]that negotiations represent.
[14:18.28]I'm sure
[14:18.84]you've met these competitive types before:
[14:21.52]they almost always have the last word;
[14:24.17]they're on the aggressive side of normal;
[14:26.64]they send back their salad
[14:28.19]because there weren't enough croutons (ͼ).
[14:31.01]Then there are the rest of us.
[14:32.70]We avoid negotiation,
[14:34.65]not because we're scared,
[14:36.05]but because it's so awfully close to an argument...
[14:39.25]Okay,
[14:40.38]maybe we're just the slightest bit scared.
[14:42.99]Or, rather, lets call it out of our comfort zone,
[14:46.16] instead of scaredthat's much more civil.
[14:49.17]Regardless of how it makes you feel,
[14:51.06]negotiating is a skill
[14:52.74]that every business person needs
[14:54.91]from the CEO to the temp secretary.
[14:57.49]And when it comes to negotiating,
[14:59.51]it's all about the words you choose
[15:01.46]and how you put them together.
[15:03.25]Literary types call that diction.
[15:06.61]We're just gonna call it owning it.
[15:09.05]9 times out of 10,
[15:10.65]negotiations are about one of two things: money,or time,
[15:15.13]and there's a good chance that
[15:16.40]you'll be talking about both simultaneously
[15:18.76]at one point or another.
[15:20.72]Since both deal with what statisticians call
[15:23.10]continuous variables,
[15:25.12] meaning that they can go on forever,
[15:27.30]theoretically,
[15:28.18]you can discuss them in the same way.
[15:30.32]For example:
[15:31.36]let's say you tell an employee or outside contractor that
[15:34.63]you need a job done
[15:36.06]somewhere between 3 and 5 days from now.
[15:38.84]Right from the start,
[15:40.47]you're fighting against yourself
[15:42.05]by giving them two points to choose from,
[15:44.64]and showing them that you're indecisive,
[15:46.81]which can be read as being a pushover.
[15:49.04]Not only that,
[15:50.10]but you're almost always guaranteed
[15:51.73]to end up waiting for the date furthest away,
[15:54.54]or if you're talking money,
[15:55.96]paying the higher price.
[15:57.73]But it's important not to aim too high.
[16:00.38]When your negotiation is centered on money
[16:02.89]a salary or raise,
[16:04.39]for example
[16:05.74]I find that it's best to shoot first,
[16:07.86]aim high,
[16:08.68]and ask questions later.
[16:10.48]I know, I'm using a lot of gun metaphorsforgive me.
[16:14.44]There's a reason that you want to beat them to the punch:
[16:17.26]whatever number is thrown out first
[16:19.14]is the number that both partied focus on
[16:21.96]it becomes a kind of anchor for the negotiation.
[16:25.02]Hope you enjoy today's talk.
[16:26.87]Thanks!
[16:28.97]16. What does the introduction say about Dr.
[16:33.43]Green's articles and books?
[16:48.47]17. What does the speaker say about negotiating?
[17:05.99]18. What are negotiations mainly about?
[17:23.38]19. What does the speaker suggest people do
[17:27.94]if they negotiate on salary or raise?
[17:44.03]Now listen to the following recording
[17:46.14]and answer questions 20 to 22.
[17:50.15]Hello, everyone.
[17:50.86]I want to share something
[17:52.00]about myself with you first.
[17:54.30]Looking back on my younger days,
[17:56.14]I find it incredibly ironic
[17:58.18]how much of my life
[17:59.69]I spent listening to Pink Floyd,
[18:01.90]whose hit song Time is specifically
[18:04.06]about not sitting around
[18:05.90]and letting life pass you by.
[18:08.01]But, like so many high school and college students,
[18:11.49]I wasted a lot of my time in the short-and long-term.
[18:16.26]I would sleep late on Saturdays,
[18:18.39]lose hours “hanging out” with friends
[18:20.76]and scrolling through Facebook and Tumblr endlessly.
[18:24.50]In the long-term,
[18:25.50]I was also never sure
[18:26.75]what I wanted to do with my life,
[18:29.13]so I drifted through the easiest college courses,
[18:32.62]never really pushing myself to do better.
[18:35.17]It wasn't until I hit around 25
[18:37.81]that I realized I'd missed a large chunk of my life
[18:41.07]for absolutely no reason.
[18:43.18]The “good times” I'd had weren't that great,
[18:45.76]and, in truth,
[18:47.28]I was always just passing time
[18:48.92]until something better came along.
[18:51.28]What I realized is that nothing simply “comes along.”
[18:54.85]Life is what you make of it.
[18:56.83]If you're unhappy with something in your life,
[18:59.24]there is nothing stopping you
[19:00.69]from making moves to change it.
[19:03.27]My problem in college
[19:04.83]was that I'd figured I'd already sunk time
[19:07.24]and money into studying toward one degree,
[19:09.84]so switching majors in the middle of my college career
[19:12.56]would be a hassle.
[19:14.09]Well,
[19:14.97]it would have been a minor hassle then,
[19:17.35]but it's a major hassle now
[19:19.01]that I'm in the real world
[19:20.57]without a clue of where to go from here.
[19:23.06]The idea that good things come to those
[19:24.96]who wait works for children
[19:26.53]who rely on their parents for everything they desire in life.
[19:30.45]Once you have control of your own life,
[19:32.85]you need to go out and earn everything
[19:34.63]you desire and hope for in the world.
[19:37.13]You'll certainly need to be patient,
[19:39.41]such as when waiting for a call back
[19:40.94]after an interview,
[19:42.34]but you shouldn't waste the time in-between
[19:45.08]just waiting for your phone to ring.
[19:47.23]I'm not saying you should do
[19:48.37]the whole “YOLO” thing kids talk about these days
[19:51.70]and put yourself in danger.
[19:53.71]But you definitely should take the leaps of faith
[19:55.81]that are necessary to push you forward in life.
[19:58.26]If you never step out of your comfort zone,
[20:00.75]you'll end up sitting on your couch
[20:02.49]watching sitcom reruns your entire life.
[20:06.06]Try to do something
[20:07.28]that scares you and makes you feel vulnerable every day.
[20:10.69]There's no point in getting out of bed today
[20:13.16]if you're going to do the exact same thing you did yesterday.
[20:16.10]The world has a lot to offer;
[20:18.00]try to get as much out of it as you can.
[20:20.69]Wish you save every second of the day.
[20:23.36]Thanks for listening!
[20:25.58]20. What should we do
[20:28.06]if we are unhappy with something in our life?
[20:44.34]21. What does the speaker suggest we do
[20:47.49] by mentioning waiting for a call?
[21:02.57]22. What is mentioned as a way of steping out of comfort zone?
[21:21.34]Now listen to the following recording
[21:23.31]and answer questions 23 to 25.
[21:27.12]Good afternoon, every one!
[21:28.58]Welcome to today's lecture.
[21:30.54]Have you ever realized that
[21:31.70]we are all largely responsible
[21:33.56]for our own emotional health and well-being?
[21:36.53]What does that mean?
[21:37.92]That what we say to ourselves over and over for days,
[21:41.05]weeks, months, and sometimes years,
[21:43.77]has a dramatic effect on how we see ourselves.
[21:47.06]I discovered how powerful the effect of conditioning is firsthand
[21:51.40]when I was listening to some oldies
[21:53.42]the other day on the radio—
[21:54.86]I was amazed
[21:55.67]at how quickly I could belt out the words to songs
[21:58.63]I hadn't heard in decades.
[22:00.70]How could I remember all those lyrics
[22:02.87]from so long ago?
[22:04.09]Because I was conditioned by them.
[22:06.14]I listened and sang those words day in
[22:08.22]and day out for what seemed like forever,
[22:10.91]until they were burned into my brain cells,
[22:13.32]and some of those old songs even provoked strong feelings in me
[22:17.19]as I took a quick trip down memory lane.
[22:19.99]The mind is a powerful thing,
[22:21.95]and in a nanosecond,
[22:23.38]it can elevate or crush our mood
[22:25.52]because of the beliefs lurking behind our feelings.
[22:28.86]If you think I'm kidding,
[22:30.24]try it yourself: think of an old song,
[22:32.99]or even the lyrics to one of
[22:34.79]your favorite television shows.
[22:36.90]Those of us who are old enough
[22:38.40]can belt out the opening line
[22:39.96]to The Beverly Hillbillies in our sleep.
[22:42.56]So, what does all this have to do
[22:44.55]with our emotional health?
[22:46.45]Everything.
[22:47.83]Many of us have problems
[22:48.92]with negative thoughts
[22:50.06]playing on the channel of our minds,
[22:52.55]but if you're engaging in it consistently,
[22:54.96]and you believe it,
[22:56.14]it could be eroding your sense of self-esteem.
[22:59.23]Negative thoughts conjure up bad feelings
[23:01.74]and hook you into believing that
[23:03.55]what those old tapes in your head play
[23:06.06]is actually true.
[23:07.51]In short, it brings your focus on your failures,
[23:10.96]and that gets you nowhere.
[23:12.97]What can you do?
[23:14.37]Here are some suggestions:
[23:15.84]First,
[23:16.76]recognize that actions always follow beliefs.
[23:19.66]Whatever you believe,
[23:20.91]you'll experience more of,
[23:22.97]and you'll also find yourself behaving in ways
[23:25.15]that are congruent with your beliefs.
[23:27.56]So, start believing the best about yourself:
[23:30.41]act as if you believe
[23:31.91]that you're a valuable and worthy person.
[23:34.81]Second,
[23:35.76]pay attention to triggers.
[23:37.50]Triggers are anything that can start the old tapes playing.
[23:40.81]If a certain person is a trigger for you,
[23:43.50]set boundaries with him.
[23:45.74]Third,
[23:46.74]develop positive counterstatements
[23:48.34]to refute negative self-talk.
[23:50.74]Thinking poorly about ourselves
[23:52.46]gets us nowhere and is extremely self-limiting.
[23:55.90]Decide today to turn off the negative self-talk channel
[23:59.42]in your mind and develop your true potential.
[24:03.00]Fourth, back at you.
[24:05.09]If you've struggled with negative thoughts,
[24:06.74]how did you overcome it
[24:08.54]and go on to reach your full potential?
[24:10.64]Hope you enjoy today's lecture.
[24:12.86]Thanks for listening!
[24:14.95]23. What will be influenced by what we say to ourselves?
[24:33.62]24. What will happen
[24:36.38]if we engage in negative thoughts consistently?
[24:52.56]25. What should we do with triggers?
[25:08.91]This is the end of listening comprehension.
